What's the Secret behind Matt Ryan's Impressive Season?

January 18, 2017

Whether you support the Falcons, Packers or neither, you can’t argue that Matt Ryan is having one hell of a season! Ryan, the quarterback for the Atlanta Falcons, is the unanimous choice for NFC South Comeback player of the year.

Ultimate Comeback

After finishing the 2015 season, he was ranked 13th among quarterbacks in ESPN’s preseason poll. Flash forward to 2016, and he is now a top contender for the upcoming National Football League’s MVP award. Talk about a comeback! He’s thrown a career-best 38 touchdown passes after throwing only 21 a year ago and propelled his team into the playoffs.

The NFL recently confirmed that he has set yet another record; completing passes to 13 different receivers this season! As many football fans know, quarterbacks typically rely on one or two key receivers. Nevertheless, Ryan appears to be willing to spread the ball around. It’s a major reason the Falcons have excelled this year on offense.

Acute Spatial Awareness

He’s thrown scoring passes to DJ Tialavea, Josh Perkins and Aldrick Robinson. This is clearly a testament of how effective Ryan is at recognizing key play opportunities, anticipating a play and being aware of his surroundings. It appears that he has acute spatial awareness, the type of vision needed to scan the field for open receivers.

Quarterback’s Competitive Edge

In a recent New York Times article, Ryan credited NeuroTracker, a cognitive training tool, for improving his spatial awareness. He says, “I use it all year-round. That’s key as a quarterback, to be able to see things and how they relate to each other quickly. I think that’s exactly what NeuroTracker helps you do.”

As the Falcons continue on their path to greatness, it’s no secret that Ryan will be training both his body and his mind. As he stated, “We spend a lot of time working on our bodies. It’s equally important to have your mind operating on a high level.” He told the New York Times that he considers NeuroTracker as crucial to his performance as lifting weights or training agility.

NFC Championship Game

For only their fourth time in their 51-year history, the Falcons will be playing for the conference title and spot in the Super Bowl. We look forward to cheering on the Falcons this Sunday as they face the Packers and head to the NFC championship game. Go Falcons Go!
