Eye4vision, one of NeuroTracker’s most successful Key Opinion Leader (KOL) partners, has officially launched a groundbreaking pilot study in collaboration with HC Kampong, one of the top women’s field hockey clubs in the country. The program, called Protect, is designed to improve the early recognition and treatment of sport-related concussions (mild traumatic brain injuries, mTBI) in elite athletes
The study is already attracting media attention, with national broadcaster NOS-Sport featuring a video article filmed on location with Eye4vision’s Richard Hoctin Boes.
Concussions are a growing concern in sport. Despite hockey not being a contact sport, head injuries are surprisingly common. In the past season alone, HC Kampong’s women’s first team recorded four head injury incidents.
The Protect pilot introduces a standardized concussion assessment and management method that integrates preseason baseline measurements with immediate post-injury comparisons. This includes neurocognitive testing, balance, reaction time, and visual processing assessments. Using these objective measures, clinicians can more accurately diagnose concussions, tailor recovery programs, and make safe Return-to-Play decisions.
Eye4vision’s neuro-optometrist Richard Hoctin Boes explained:
“By using objective measurements, we can diagnose and treat concussions with much greater precision. Our goal is that athletes recover faster and more fully, while drastically reducing the risk of recurring symptoms. This protocol is a breakthrough for hockey and could serve as a model for other sports in the Netherlands.”
Eye4vision is a leading neuro-optometry practice in the Netherlands, recognized for its advanced approach to vision, brain health, and performance. Founded and led by Richard Hoctin Boes, the practice specializes in diagnosing and treating visual and neurological dysfunctions, from sport-related injuries to developmental and learning challenges.
As a NeuroTracker KOL partner, Eye4vision has become one of our most successful clients, integrating cutting-edge cognitive technologies into both clinical care and elite sports performance programs. Their innovative mindset and commitment to evidence-based practice continue to set an example for how KOL partners can drive research and shape the future of brain health.
Beyond protecting its own players, HC Kampong and Eye4vision aim for the Protect protocol to serve as a nationally scalable model for concussion management across Dutch sports. Supported by sports scientists, the project represents a crucial step towards a more consistent, science-based approach to concussion recognition and recovery.
At NeuroTracker, we are proud to see KOL partners like Eye4vision pioneering new research that bridges clinical practice, sports performance, and athlete safety. This pilot is a strong example of how collaboration can move the field forward—delivering not only better outcomes for athletes today, but also shaping the future of sport-related brain health management.
